The first three books are some of the best litrpg I've read. Not perfect, but well worth buying and reading...and re-reading.And all the investment of three books gets thrown out in Book 4. For one, it seemed to take a long time to come out, and when it did...it's as if the author got bored with his previous engaging storyline and underwent a bad break-up in the interim. Now, I'm not sure why the harem element is so popular in litrpg, except as nerdboy wish fulfillment. It's pretty obvious most of the authors haven't ever had even a semi-successful relationship with a real live female. In the first three books, Our Hero admired women and was attracted to them, but wasn't particularly interested in anything serious. The encounters he had were explained well; vastly different cultures and so on.In Book 4, virtually every new character is female and, of course, gorgeous and inexplicably hot for the MC...even if they're not the same race. His surprise love-of-his-life is...wait for it...a centaur. This gives me a lot more doubt about our MC than it does respect for his breaking cultural barriers and stuff. Now, the centaur thing worked...in a very squicky way...in the Wild Cards shared-world series, but that was a lot different than whatever this is or wants to be.And the MC falls in `love' with unbelievable speed. I don't know of anyone that ever fell in `love' that fast. Love at first sight, sure, gotcha...but when you're talking not just crossing racial barriers, but species barriers? I somehow doubt it will happen in two or three days. I'm pretty sure it takes even the most well-educated and open-minded gay or furry or other non-traditional sexual proclivity a bit longer to come to terms with their attraction to someone/something outside the norm. Our MC..."Oh, a topless centaur with big bare boobs! And she's kind of a b*tch! Why am I somewhat attracted, is it the bare boobs?" Two days later and he's, "I love her so much! My heart is hers alone!"In there was a lot of combat and other exciting things, which really left little to no time for such things as falling in love...or even getting to know the other person.Meanwhile, Miya the sorta-love-interest from the original trilogy is basically forgotten. That was a good relationship...especially for litrpg...not simple, or formulaic. They had interesting interaction, both made some mistakes, they had personality clashes and in general slowly limped along getting to know each other. You know, like real people do.Kiss that goodbye. Why the author thought the centaur was a good idea...especially in as clumsy and uncomfortable a fashion as their every interaction is...seriously, she could be a human librarian and you'd still wince and sneer because all their scenes are just so lame and forced...!So, the author lost it. There is literally nothing to recommend Book 4; I'll buy Book 5 when it comes out, but if it's more of this crazy crap...color me done. Which is sad, because the first three books are awesome. Most everything I liked in the first three are here, but oddly...perverted. Thinking outside the box in order to win in unexpected ways? Great! Except in this one, our MC is the *only* one who can save the day...and apparently, he now knows everything and nothing can happen without his input. Now, apparently, this roughly twenty-something e-sport streamer is an expert engineer, shipwright, politician, siege mechanic, and absolutely whatever it takes to be awesome. Not thinking outside the box...but now he knows everything in the box and potentially in the box. I know, for example, of the existence of the Chinese Chi Ko Nu repeating crossbow...but ask me to draw up blueprints? Yeah, not gonna happen, at least not in any fashion another sane person could decipher. Our MC can do it, though...along with designing new boats, submarines, and so on.All without any previous hint he had this sort of knowledge...and if he had this sort of knowledge, odds are he'd have a lot more dedication to a job other than e-sports streaming. It's not something you just `pick up' as you go.As in the first three books, there are a lot of fights, but they've become boring and pedantic. The Bad Guys are always ten or more levels higher than our MC, and they're elites. He gets hurt, spams a few spells, and Bad Guy dies. There's no tension, unlike the first three books, where you could read and go, "Cool! I never would have considered that tactic!"All I can think is the author got bored with the series, and forced this out like the morning after bad Mexican food the night before. Contract obligations or he had a bad break-up and spent a little too much time on websites of a questionable nature in order to bleach the Evil Ex from his mind...Seriously, this is not a good 4th book in the series. I prefer to pretend it was never written. Hopefully, Book 5 will redeem it, but I'm not confident. Just hit the part where it said **The story continues in Book Five coming soon** and now I am upset. I read through it too fast, and now I have to wait for book 5, which is going to be painful - because let's face it...book 4 just came out.I am totally committed to these adventures in The World with Startum and his motley crew of friends and vassals! Book 4 is much longer than any of the previous books with plenty of action, great character and world building, and lots of laughs along the way. I really, really enjoyed this book and the whole series along the way. I like them so much I am buying them instead of borrowing through my Kindle Unlimited. I hope that this series continues for many more episodes.Thank you Jason Cheek for another great trip through The World! Now get back to writing please?
